As residents of the TriState area, we recognize the challenges the city-life presents. This is a big reason why VT Foothills exists - as a peaceful retreat from the busy and chaotic reality of existing in New York City. Some of our neighbors are not as fortinate as others and fall victim to the economic pressures that are increasingly present and undeniable. Rents and cost of living have skyrocketed, and not everyone can stay afloat.
Breaking Ground is a non-profit whose mission is to strengthen individuals, families and communities by developing and sustaining exceptional supportive and affordable housing as well as programs for homeless and other vulnerable New Yorkers. VT Foothills is proud to be teaming up to support the efforts of Breaking Ground by offering a weekend stay available for bid at the silent auction taking place at the annual Serving Up Home fundraiser, presented by the Junior Board of Breaking Ground.
Dan has been activly involved with the Breaking Ground junior board since 2024 and is currently a member of the Junior Board. This will be the second time a weekend stay has been offered as an auction item at the SUH fundraiser to directly benefit Breaking Ground. Last year, the auction item helped the fundraiser exceed it's annual fundraising objective. The funds raised went towards completing upgrades to a Breaking Ground drop-in center in Queens, providing a safe haven for anyone in need of a shower, job placement services, etc.
The unique experience of cozying up in a small bed without the accomodations of a traditional domacile like plumbing or electricity for some can feel primitive. We feel that the type of experience VT Foothills provides helps build an appreciation for modern amenities we often take for granted. As millions of fellow Americans are sleeping on the street every night, we would argue that choosing to embrace the experience of primitivity is in intself a luxury. Having the option to escape and reconnect with nature can be a balance of reminding oneself how lucky many of us are in our daily lives while still enjoying the comforts of a warm fire and fresh bed sheets.
Disconnecting can be a great way to achieve a mental reset in the short term, but having a community and support system is key for long-term stability and security. If you are interested in learning more about Breaking Ground and it's impact on the community, we invite you to the Serving Up Home fundraising event taking place on May 6th 2025 at the Prince George Ballroom in Manhattan.
If you are unable to attend but still interested in contributing, consider attending the August 25th New York Liberty WNBA game against the Connecticut Suns. $19 of every ticket sold through this link will go directly back to Breaking Ground. Additionally, Breaking Ground will be the non-profit of the game featured courtside.
Beyond that, the annual Breaking Ground Gala will take place in October.
